中国人常常一看 they 就想到“人”的“他们”，其实英文可以指事物。

• “Are there more questions?” There were several. They concerned the tactics to be employed...“还有什么问题吗？”大家又提出了几个问题。是有关要采取什么策略的…
• Years had passed, and apparently they had neither healed nor mellowed her anger.岁月过去了，但是看来并没有消除也没有缓和她的怒火。
• The younger Tamils insisted that Gandhian methods were of no use: they might have worked in India, but that was because they were used by a majority against the minority.年轻的泰米尔人坚持认为，甘地式的方法是没用的：这些办法在印度能够见效，但那是因为那是多数人用来对付少数人。

有人英译中时把不指人的 they 译成“它们”，不大符合中文的习惯。
