1) 作为名词，不一定指“诺言”，可以是“未来的良好前景”、“发展前途”。

• The new drug holds great promise, especially for women.新药前途广大，尤其是对于妇女。
• There is nothing to show how that this fortunate situation is based on any permanent foundations, or holds any particular promise for the future.没有什么迹象表明，这种顺利的局面有任何长远的基础或是具有任何特别的发展前途。
• Does the new project have sufficient commercial promise to make an investment worthwhile?新项目有没有充足的商业前途，是否值得进行投资？

由 promise 的现在分词变来的形容词 promising，也是“大有前途”的意思。

• The scandal threatened an abrupt end to a promising political career.丑闻有可能使得一个人大有前途的政治生涯戛然而止。

2) 作为及物动词，可以表示一个“作出许诺”的行动，此时是个表示瞬时动作的第四类动词，可以有双宾语，间接宾语在前，直接宾语（可以是 that 引入的名词从句）在后。

• She promised them (that) she wouldn't tell anybody.她答应了他们，对谁都不说。

也可以转换为被动句，原先的间接宾语可以转换为主语。

• They have been promised help.人家原先答应过要帮助他们。

3) 作为及物动词，还可以表示一个“显示未来前途如何”的状态，此时是个表示延续状态的第一类动词，通常显示的未来前途是正面良好的。

• It promises to be an exciting week.这一周看来会是很令人兴奋的。

但也可以是负面不好的。

• Unchecked, the problem promises to undermine consumer confidence.问题如果得不到制止，势必动摇消费者信心。
• But proving that these detainees were responsible for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, promises to be a protracted and uncertain legal battle. (US News & World Report, Feb. 25, 2008, p.14)但是，要证明这些被关押者要对 2001 年 9 月 11 日的恐怖袭击负责，那将是一场旷日持久而且没有把握的法律战役。
